About Ethan Pond Wildlife Management Area

Located in the towns of Tamworth and Ossipee in New Hampshire, Ethan Pond Wildlife Management Area (WMA) spans a variety of wetland and upland habitats supporting a rich diversity of wildlife. The area encompasses forested swamps, hardwood stands, shrublands, and open ponds, including the notable Ethan Pond itself. These ecosystems provide critical habitat for waterfowl, moose, black bear, deer, beaver, and many migratory bird species. The terrain is gently rolling with wet soils in some areas, characterized by mixed hardwood and softwood forests that change with the seasons. Historically managed by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, this area focuses on maintaining habitat for wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation. Visitors can enjoy scenic hiking trails and multiple access points for hunting and fishing activities during seasonally regulated periods. The area’s ponds and streams attract anglers seeking native trout and other freshwater species. While primarily managed for hunting and wildlife conservation, Ethan Pond WMA also draws bird watchers, photographers, and hikers who appreciate the peaceful, natural setting. The wildlife area serves as an example of northern New England’s rich wetland habitats, combining solitude with diverse opportunities to connect with nature. Access is available via several gravel roads off NH Route 16 and from smaller forest roads. The area’s undeveloped character offers a relatively quiet wilderness feel within reach of nearby towns and amenities.
